Playstation 3 Firmware 4.00 Detailed

Vita-centric update coming later this week.

Doesn’t it make you jealous to the point of despair that people in Japan will be playing with the Vita next month? The good news is some time this week everyone else will be able to get a piece of that Vita action: by preparing their PS3 for it. The bad news: still no Vita. Oh, and the good news was a joke.

What 4.00 does is allow the Vita to use the PS3 as a media hub: transferring games, music, photos and videos, along with backing up save data and updating firmware. You’ll be able to use Sony’s Media Go program on PC as well, if you prefer. This will sound familiar to PSP users, who are likely also hoping the process has been made more elegant.

For us Playstation Plus snobs it’s time to groan, “Finally!” at Sony. You will be able to individually enable/disable the following from automatic downloads:

  • Game patches
  • System software
  • Recommended games and videos
  • Sync trophy information

Not a Playstation Plus member? Not buying a Vita? Nothing for you then, other than the risk of it bricking your system of course.
