The outstanding skate classic just got even more outstandinger.
Sound the alarms, light the cannons – it’s on! SEGA have today confirmed that the brilliant ‘Jet Set Radio’ is to be getting a full HD reboot, and will be available to download on XBLA, PSN and Windows PC Digital this summer.
Last week, Thumb Culture broke the news with a typically cryptic trailer from Sega, without the video itself confirming the games existence – even though we all knew it was coming – and today it’s been confirmed the Dreamcast classic is really, truly arriving. FLUCKERDING.
DJ Professor K, Beat, Gum and all the GG’s are coming back to his the streets, where – if you’ve never played it before, which is heartbreaking – you fight for control of a cel-shaded future Tokyo-to by marking turf with graffiti tagged across billboards, walls of the city and the rival gang members. With untouchable gameplay, an absolutely cracking soundtrack and the incredible cel-shaded visuals, you really can’t afford to miss out on this. Take it from us, if you haven’t yet played it you owe it to yourself. Yup, it really is THAT good.
The blurb from SEGA explains:
‘Jet Set Radio lets players join the GGs, an up-and-coming street gang in the futuristic city of Tokyo-to, fighting for the right to self-expression against an overbearing, corporate-controlled police force. Rolling and leaping through crowded urban environments on magnetically driven inline skates, players take control of gang leader Beat and his growing posse of deviant artists as they steal turf from the local gangs by covering the city with colorful graffiti. Guided by Professor K, DJ for the hottest pirate broadcast in town – “Jet Set Radio” – the GGs will ultimately uncover the sinister plot hatched by the controlling powers of Tokyo-to’.
Not ones to rest on their laurels, SEGA today also announced an interesting sounding contest which will incorporate the love of graffiti – or digital graffiti in this case – here in the UK and across the pond. Fans are going to be able to get a chance at designing eighteen brand new pieces of in game art that will be incorporated into the game and seen by everyone who downloads it. Winners will receive a prize pack that features an Etón Rukus – the world’s first Bluetooth sound system with solar power, along with a number of other rewards. Head to www.sega.com/jsrcontest for more information.
About the contest, Haruki Satomi SVP of Digital Business at SEGA of America had this to say,
“Every time we look at our favourite SEGA classics, the fans never fail to ask about Jet Set Radio, the game was unlike anything else when it first came out, and was one of the first games in history to use cel-shading. More importantly, Jet Set Radio is a game that celebrates self-expression, and we’re looking forward to seeing how gamers and artists come together to leave their mark on Tokyo-to.”
