Alien Swarm in First Person is Terrifying

Alien Swarm, the version of the original redone in the Source engine from Valve has since been release on Steam. While it was awesome as an isometric shooter, thanks to a console command it can be played as an FPS, which is just terrifying.

Complicated as it may seem, if you’ve been playing video games on the PC for an extended period of time, this shouldn’t pose any sort of problem to you. But thankfully, the commands to take you from a sky view and into the boots of your marine have been made available.

In a running game of Alien Swarm simply go to Options > Keyboard > Enable developer console. Then hit ` (to the left of 1) and type:

firstperson

asw_hide_marine 1

asw_controls 0

And then you can experience the terror first hand.

    WOW, this is brilliant!
I hate 3PS, and Iso games, but there so many of them i’ve wished i could have in FPS mode. Also, big thanks to Valve, and their SourceEngine, as well as for releasing this FREE on steam.

Anyone know of a potential command to turn the “skybox” dark?

FYI: Alien Swarm is not “isometric”.

Doesn’t look very terrifying to me… I guess you guys have never played the original “Doom”.

        Doom ?
What about Castle Wolfenstein (which predates Doom :) ) ?

Nice try kid, you’re good with Wikipedia, but you clearly weren’t there. Whilst Wolfenstein 3D does indeed pre-date Doom, it didn’t have anything like the cultural impact that Doom did.
Doom pretty much overnight turned the PC into a gaming platform. Before Doom, PC’s were seen as business machines. Sure there were games available, but nothing shook the face of gaming for PC like Doom did.
For many people not exposed to games before, Doom really was an engrossing visual experience of which they’d never seen before.

Yeah, that’s a load of bullshit…  Doom was exceptionally popular, but mostly because of the anticipation of the Wolfenstein 3d fans for a new release from the same company.
PC gaming was actually quite popular from the late 1970s on, with systems such as the Commodore 64 and 128 being used primarily for gaming.
I was there, I was buying computer games from a free standing store in a town of 30,000 in 1986.  I promise that store could not have stayed in business if nobody played computer games until 1993.

Didn’t appeal to me at all. but each to their own, I found Doom positively annoying, but that’s because I hate mazes.

It has too many bugs. As a tech you can’t hack (screen comes up but you can’t select the puzzle pieces) and you can’t tumble/roll…just puts you into a wall or some other random place. If those bugs get worked out it could be fun to play this way.

Anyone know what the asw_controls 0 does? I can’t tell teammates to launch their items (like heal kits and flares), always getting “can’t find launch node” error in the logs, they show when you open the menu to do the 1st person code.

As far as I know, it changes the camera controls somewhat, so you’re controlling the camera with the mouse. I could be entirely wrong, so don’t take my word for it.

asw_controls 0 gives you fps movement, asw_controls 1 gives you the top-down view independent mouse. Bind those somewhere, you can switch between them & unlock the mouse to hack things.

I know we all like to reminisce about old games, but Alan Wake scared the crap out of me on a near constant basis.

Is there anyway at all to fix the hacking in FPS? I got stuck on the single tile and it sucks. I really want to play like this, it looks much more fun.

    1) sv_cheats needs to be set to 1 for the 2nd to lines to work (or so the game tells me when i tried it.

    2) paste the commands into notepad, and save it as a .cfg file (I named mine fps.cfg) and save it to your “Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonalien swarmswarmcfg” directory. That way you only have to bring up the console and type exec fps.cfg for it all to happen. Or you can create a custom bind to run the cfg file, but either way it will save some time and keystrokes, esp, if you switch between views.

Well, sorry to pull age (and rank) on you Tony, but Mr. T didn’t say anything about Wolfenstein 3D … he said “Castle Wolfenstein”… And obviously, you weren’t there.   Castle Wolfenstein was 2D,  ran on the Apple II and C64, and it *was* scary.   When those SS guys busted into the room shouting “SS” it was terrifying…  Got that, “Kid”?

Doom is what made history (for me at least). Wolfenstien pales in comparison, but I guess if I played Wolfenstien first it would feel as good as Doom. Any one below the age of 35 is not gonna even understand what the fuss is about anyways.

I did something similar with L4D last year, except backwards.  Turned Left 4 Dead into a stationary camera 3rd person shooter.  Awesome except for the Y axis problem: its hard to aim accurately at something up high or down low  “and cr0wning is next to impossible”.  Finely came up with this: a no hud 3rd person realism mode http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Jxwe8j_ldY
But I gave this FPS swarm thing a try: doesn’t really move right and lags like hell, but good for the novelty.  Don’t think I’ll be playing AS-FPS on Insane anytime soon.

Do you have a you tube clip of L4D? I think that would make a nice follow up article. Don’t know if you fancy a bit of writing or forward what you have and we’ll write it up for you. This has been such a popular post would be cool to follow it up with something. email anything you have to press@thumb-culture.com
